Dry Needling
Anyone suffering from a condition related to myofascial dysfunction throughout the body could be a candidate and benefit from dry needling. We have successfully treated the TMJ, plantar fasciitis, osteoarthritis, tendinitis, fibromyalgia, headaches, and muscle strains.
Dry Needling is an invasive procedure that involves inserting a thin solid filament needle into the muscle tissue. There are trigger points situated within the muscle tissue which are the source of pain and tension creating multiple myofascial trigger points. The insertion of the needle to the trigger point releases the tension many times resulting in an immediate improvement in muscle function and pain reduction.
The process of needle insertion is virtually painless for most patients. When a trigger point is located a twitch response is initiated. This sensation of the twitch response can be described as a local muscle myofascial contraction which subsides almost instantaneously. Many times there is some lingering soreness following a treatment) which subsides in most cases within 24 hours.
Some people do not experience this soreness after the treatment.
This is not the same process as acupuncture even though there are similar looks and use the same basic tools. Dry needling is focused on the release of muscle tension based on scientific studies and knowledge and principles of western medicine whereas acupuncture is focused on traditional Chinese medicine and a balance of ‘energy flow’.
